The object of study of the present research is the dedication in the printed text, an essential element of the authorial peritext. This research focuses on textual linguistics and on the analysis of the discourse from an enunciative perspective and aims at understanding the purpose of the dedication, as speech and to grasp its functions as discursive genre. What follows is a prototypical description of the genre of the book dedication from the close survey of its main functions, taking into consideration the context, the conditions of production and the reception of the discourse, as well as the unique traits in the text of dedications.
