This paper deals with the process of language acquisition by Brazilian children, focusing on the construction of phonological knowledge of segmental units of the language, specifically the lateral liquid /l/. The discussion includes the analysis of the internal structure of the segment, the syllabic constitution of the Coda, the morphophonological behavior of the segment and the phonology/orthography relationship established in the process of writing acquisition. The possibility of change in representations in a continuous process of development of phonological knowledge is considered based on the proposal of Boersma (2011).
